Requirements List - Patchwork for Beginners (8 week course)

General
  • Sewing Machine, power lead, foot pedal and the Instruction Book
  • Spare Machine Bobbins that fit your machine
  • Universal Sewing Machine Needles (preferably size 80 and 90)
  • Pins
  • Wonder clips
  • Safety pins (curved preferably)
  • Unpicker/Seam Ripper
  • Scissors - one pair for cutting out fabric; one pair for paper and a small pair for snipping threads and clipping fabrics
  • Rotary cutter (if you already own any acrylic rulers then bring these too)

  • Pen, pencil and notebook
  • 505 Spray Adhesive (optional and will be discussed on the course)

Project Requirements

Sampler Version

  • 6 Fat Quarters to start with (you will not use all of these unless you do the full quilt version - this is a good starting point and exact requirements will be discussed on the course). It's better to bring a selection of both light and dark; patterned and plain fabrics.
  • Matching thread (if you have contrasting colour fabrics then a light grey normally works well).

Note

There will be additional fabric, thread and wadding requirements later in the course; but these will be discussed in the first few weeks once you have decided how big you want your finished quilt to be.

Hugs & Kisses

  • 1m each of 3 different coordinating fabrics. Try to make 1 your feature fabric; 1 a plainish dark colour and 1 a plainish light colour.
  • Matching thread (if you have contrasting colour fabrics then a light grey normally works well).
  • Wadding or fleece at least 130cm x 130cm
  • 50cm of fabric for binding (only if you are using wadding).

All Machine Sewing Classes

We do not provide sewing machines for classes as we believe that you will learn more from using your own machine. If your machine is too heavy to lift; let us know before the class and we can make exception by prior arrangement.

We can help you to get your sewing machine from your car to the workshop space upstairs if you pull up outside the shop on the double yellow lines to drop it off. Then you can go and park in the car park behind.

Lunch Breaks

If your class goes over lunchtime you can either:

  • Bring your lunch with you
  • Pre-order your lunch from the lovely cafe opposite the shop (The Commute). (They now do take out sandwiches and paninis too).

Our day long classes generally only break for a maximum 30 minutes so there isn't really time to go out and buy lunch during the day.
