Classes - What to Bring (Requirements Lists) - Dressmaking - Shirts
Requirements List - Dressmaking - Shirts (3 Week Evening Course)
Project Requirements
Your fabric choice is wide for this project (see below for quantities and notion requirements). It needs to be woven but can be a lightweight cotton through to a heavier weight needlecord.
But; please make sure that the fabric you choose has a clear right and wrong side and has no visible stripe or stripe effect. Also avoid fabrics that need to be pattern matched across pieces. Once you have made the shirt on the course, all of these things are then possible but they will impede your learning the first time.

Please collect your pattern from the shop prior to the class (you will only be able to do this once we have confirmed there are sufficient bookings to go ahead).
Then you will need to complete the following prior to the course:
- Make any pattern adjustments you need (such as full/small bust adjustment; lengthen/shorten; height of bust point)
- Cut out your pattern pieces (please label each piece with your name)
- Obtain your fabric, wash it and cut it out
- Add all the markings (including front and back darts if appropriate, pleats, where the plackets are positioned)
- Complete the front and back darts (ladies version) (although it is possible to do these between weeks 1 and 2).
If you are uncomfortable doing any of these, we would suggest that you come on our dressmaking course or one of our dressmaking days first.
General
Please bring:
- The pattern instruction sheets pinned to your fabric pieces (please add your name to each pattern piece)
- Fusible interfacing suitable for your fabric (we recommend 30cm of Vilene H180 for the button stand and cuffs and 20cm of Vilene H200 for the collar). You may choose to use H200 for the cuffs too if your fabric is weightier than a lightweight cotton. Do not cut out any interfacing as this will be done in class differently to how the pattern says.
- Off cuts of your fabric
- Sewing Machine, Foot Pedal and Power Lead
- The Sewing Machine Instruction Book
-
Spare bobbins that fit your machine
- Packet of Size 80 Universal Sewing Machine Needles
- Thread (Gutermann Sew All is our recommendation)
- Pressing cloths, one for the fabric and one to apply to the interfacing
- Fabric Scissors
- Small scissors with sharp points
- Dressmaking pins
- Tailor's chalk or other marking tools
- Clapper for week 2 (optional)
- Pressing Cloth and Interfacing Cloth (where class involves using interfacing or bondaweb).
All Machine Sewing Classes
We do not provide sewing machines for classes as we believe that you will learn more from using your own machine. If your machine is too heavy to lift; let us know before the class and we can make exception by prior arrangement.
We can help you to get your sewing machine from your car to the workshop space upstairs if you pull up outside the shop on the double yellow lines to drop it off. Then you can go and park in the car park behind.
