Memory Quilt Course - What to Bring (Requirements List)

Requirements List Memory Quilt Course

General

  • Sewing Machine, power lead, foot pedal and the Instruction Book
  • Spare Machine Bobbins that fit your machine
  • Universal Sewing Machine Needles (preferably size 80 or 90)
  • Pins
  • Wonder clips
  • Safety pins (curved preferably)
  • Unpicker/Seam Ripper
  • Scissors - one pair for cutting out fabric; one pair for paper and a small pair for snipping threads and clipping fabrics
  • Rotary cutter (if you already own any acrylic rulers then bring these too - we include a free 6.5" square ruler which is the mainstay of this course)
  • Marking tools (chalk, iron off/wash off pens, chalk pencils)
  • Pen, pencil and notebook
  • 505 Spray Adhesive (optional and will be discussed on the course)
  • Pressing Cloth and Interfacing Cloth (where class involves using interfacing, using spray glues or bondaweb).

Project Requirements

  • Items of Clothing
    • Baby Grows/Children's clothing - ideally about 30 will give you a great selection (there are 20 squares in the sample size but you can choose how many to use). The larger the size of your quilt the more homework there will be to ensure that you get to finish.
    • Adult Clothing - ideally 20 but if a garment has different patterns/textures to it, it can be used in multiple squares.
  • Interfacing
    • Vilene H180 lightweight - 2 metres minimum for 20 squares.
  • Fleece Backing
    • We recommend polar fleece (we have a huge array of colours in the shop). The size will be determined by the size of the front so we recommend that you don't buy this until you know the final size.
  • Fabric (quilting cotton) for the border and binding.
    • Again, we don't recommend that you buy this until you know how big your quilt is. We will advise on the course.
  • Matching thread (if you have contrasting colour fabrics then a light grey normally works well).

All Machine Sewing Classes

We do not provide sewing machines for classes as we believe that you will learn more from using your own machine. If your machine is too heavy to lift; let us know before the class and we can make exception by prior arrangement.

We can help you to get your sewing machine from your car to the workshop space upstairs if you pull up outside the shop on the double yellow lines to drop it off. Then you can go and park in the car park behind.

Lunch Breaks

If your class goes over lunchtime you can either:

  • Bring your lunch with you
  • Pre-order your lunch from the lovely cafe opposite the shop (The Commute). (They now do take out sandwiches and paninis too).

Our day long classes generally only break for a maximum 30 minutes so there isn't really time to go out and buy lunch during the day.
